If you were to earn your living by digging building foundations, you wouldn't choose a spade rather than a digging machine. The digging machine is the obvious choice even though you could buy thousands of spades for the same amount of money. When buying a digging machine you would compare the qualities of capacity, lifespan and price. As the holes get larger so does profitability, even though the capital investment is higher.When buying a scaffold it is reasonable to make the same judgement and there's a large difference between scaffolds and digging machines when it comes to cost depreciation.
The constantly increasing maintenance costs of a digging machine will reduce the benefit of the diminishing capital depreciation. For scaffolds, especially hot-dip galvanized steel scaffolds, there is no corresponding relationship between age and maintenance costs. Certain components may need lubricating. Otherwise, maintenance usually involves repairs due to handling damages that are not age related.
Unlike digging machines, scaffolds have a long lifespan. 30-40 year old scaffolding parts are still used today. If we also look at the technical lifespan of a scaffold, we can see that technical developments take considerably longer for scaffolding material than for digging machines that are constantly affected by hydraulics and motor development.
A modern hot-dip galvanized scaffold can therefore be expected to have a long life with hardly any age-related maintenance costs, resulting in slow depreciation.
Production cost is crucial
Estimating the capacity of a digging machine is easier than that of a scaffold. Two scaffolds can only be compared by using them on a number of typical objects that would normally require the same effort.
The cost of the resulting productivity is the determining cost during the scaffold's life-time. Even a small increase in productivity becomes important in relation to the depreciation cost and with a productivity difference of 20 % between two scaffolds, the price almost loses significance. So, you can pay considerably more for a scaffold in order to achieve this greater productivity and still make a profit.
